Nursing Home Medical Errors
A study released in the year 2000 estimated that that 350,000 medication errors per year occur in U.S. nursing homes; and that more than ½ are preventable.
The American
Journal of Medicine recently reported that half of the 546 medication-related injuries in
a study of 18 nursing homes were preventable. Forty-nine (49%) percent of the
drug-related incidents were due to caregivers' failure to monitor residents
adequately. An earlier survey indicated that perhaps 40,000 to 100,000 deaths per year
might be caused by medication-related errors.
